Why Blog about Spices, Herbs, etc?

Recently, I have seen several recipes that call for a spice called Sumac. I then found myself on a mission to locate this spice to smell it and try to cook with it. When I could not find it anywhere locally, I switched gears to research it online and the idea of Gypsy World Spice Cafe came to be.

Spices, Dried Herbs, Salts and Peppers are core ingredients in your kitchen that can convert a mediocre meal into a culinary experience. Trying new ingredients provides the opportunity to expose both you and your family with new flavors and cultures. I am hoping that by you reading my articles that you also feel inspired to try new flavors and recipes

Why do I love to Cook?

I was very lucky to grow up in a family where cooking was very important (and where measurements typically revolved around the “Big Spoon”).

Spices were key ingredients in our kitchen which created the Latin aromas that lingered throughout the house. Both my mother and grandmother loved to cook. They loved to cook big and for a lot of people. Both cooked to smell and taste. I like to think that I inherited that trait from them.

When my youngest son was a toddler, he would tend to wake up cranky from his afternoon nap. I would use Spices to transition him to a better mood. Carrying him on my hip, we would head off to the spice cabinet and start twisting lids off…letting him smell the different spices. It would immediately calm him. Now, he has an expert nose and will smell my food and say it needs more vanilla…
